Cari fratelli e sorelle di Roma e del mondo intero!

«Surrexit Christus, spes mea» – «Cristo, mia speranza, è risorto» (Sequenza pasquale).

Giunga a tutti voi la voce esultante della Chiesa, con le parole che l’antico inno pone sulle labbra di Maria Maddalena, la prima ad incontrare Gesù risorto il mattino di Pasqua.

 Ella corse dagli altri discepoli e, col cuore in gola, annunciò loro: "Ho visto il Signore!" (Gv 20,18). Anche noi, che abbiamo attraversato il deserto della Quaresima e i giorni dolorosi della Passione, oggi diamo spazio al grido di vittoria: "E’ risorto! E’ veramente risorto!".

Ogni cristiano rivive l’esperienza di Maria di Magdala. E’ un incontro che cambia la vita: l’incontro con un Uomo unico, che ci fa sperimentare tutta la bontà e la verità di Dio, che ci libera dal male non in modo superficiale, momentaneo, ma ce ne libera radicalmente, ci guarisce del tutto e ci restituisce la nostra dignità. Ecco perché la Maddalena chiama Gesù "mia speranza": perché è stato Lui a farla rinascere, a donarle un futuro nuovo, un’esistenza buona, libera dal male. "Cristo mia speranza" significa che ogni mio desiderio di bene trova in Lui una possibilità reale: con Lui posso sperare che la mia vita sia buona e sia piena, eterna, perché è Dio stesso che si è fatto vicino fino ad entrare nella nostra umanità.

Ma Maria di Magdala, come gli altri discepoli, ha dovuto vedere Gesù rifiutato dai capi del popolo, catturato, flagellato, condannato a morte e crocifisso. Dev’essere stato insopportabile vedere la Bontà in persona sottoposta alla cattiveria umana, la Verità derisa dalla menzogna, la Misericordia ingiuriata dalla vendetta. Con la morte di Gesù, sembrava fallire la speranza di quanti confidavano in Lui. Ma quella fede non venne mai meno del tutto: soprattutto nel cuore della Vergine Maria, la madre di Gesù, la fiammella è rimasta accesa in modo vivo anche nel buio della notte. La speranza, in questo mondo, non può non fare i conti con la durezza del male. Non è soltanto il muro della morte a ostacolarla, ma più ancora sono le punte acuminate dell’invidia e dell’orgoglio, della menzogna e della violenza. Gesù è passato attraverso questo intreccio mortale, per aprirci il passaggio verso il Regno della vita. C’è stato un momento in cui Gesù appariva sconfitto: le tenebre avevano invaso la terra, il silenzio di Dio era totale, la speranza una parola che sembrava ormai vana.

Ed ecco, all’alba del giorno dopo il sabato, il sepolcro viene trovato vuoto. Poi Gesù si mostra alla Maddalena, alle altre donne, ai discepoli. La fede rinasce più viva e più forte che mai, ormai invincibile, perché fondata su un’esperienza decisiva: «Morte e vita si sono affrontate / in un prodigioso duello. / Il Signore della vita era morto, / ma ora, vivo, trionfa». I segni della risurrezione attestano la vittoria della vita sulla morte, dell’amore sull’odio, della misericordia sulla vendetta: «La tomba del Cristo vivente, / la gloria del Cristo risorto, / e gli angeli suoi testimoni, / il sudario e le sue vesti».

Cari fratelli e sorelle! Se Gesù è risorto, allora – e solo allora – è avvenuto qualcosa di veramente nuovo, che cambia la condizione dell’uomo e del mondo. Allora Lui, Gesù, è qualcuno di cui ci possiamo fidare in modo assoluto, e non soltanto confidare nel suo messaggio, ma proprio in Lui, perché il Risorto non appartiene al passato, ma è presente oggi, vivo. Cristo è speranza e conforto in modo particolare per le comunità cristiane che maggiormente sono provate a causa della fede da discriminazioni e persecuzioni. Ed è presente come forza di speranza mediante la sua Chiesa, vicino ad ogni situazione umana di sofferenza e di ingiustizia.

Cristo Risorto doni speranza al Medio Oriente, affinché tutte le componenti etniche, culturali e religiose di quella Regione collaborino per il bene comune ed il rispetto dei diritti umani. In Siria, in particolare, cessi lo spargimento di sangue e si intraprenda senza indugio la via del rispetto, del dialogo e della riconciliazione, come è auspicato pure dalla comunità internazionale. I numerosi profughi, provenienti da quel Paese e bisognosi di assistenza umanitaria, trovino l’accoglienza e la solidarietà che possano alleviare le loro penose sofferenze. La vittoria pasquale incoraggi il popolo iracheno a non risparmiare alcuno sforzo per avanzare nel cammino della stabilità e dello sviluppo. In Terra Santa, Israeliani e Palestinesi riprendano con coraggio il processo di pace.

Il Signore, vittorioso sul male e sulla morte, sostenga le comunità cristiane del Continente africano, dia loro speranza per affrontare le difficoltà, le renda operatrici di pace e artefici dello sviluppo delle società a cui appartengono.

Gesù Risorto conforti le popolazioni sofferenti del Corno d’Africa e ne favorisca la riconciliazione; aiuti la Regione dei Grandi Laghi, il Sudan ed il Sud Sudan, donando ai rispettivi abitanti la forza del perdono. Al Mali, che attraversa un delicato momento politico, Cristo Glorioso conceda pace e stabilità. Alla Nigeria, che in questi ultimi tempi è stata teatro di sanguinosi attacchi terroristici, la gioia pasquale infonda le energie necessarie per riprendere a costruire una società pacifica e rispettosa della libertà religiosa di tutti i suoi cittadini.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Rome and throughout the world!

"Surrexit Christus, spes mea" – "Christ, my hope, has risen" (Easter Sequence).

May the jubilant voice of the Church reach all of you with the words which the ancient hymn puts on the lips of Mary Magdalene, the first to encounter the risen Jesus on Easter morning. She ran to the other disciples and breathlessly announced: "I have seen the Lord!" (Jn 20:18). We too, who have journeyed through the desert of Lent and the sorrowful days of the Passion, today raise the cry of victory: "He has risen! He has truly risen!"

Every Christian relives the experience of Mary Magdalene. It involves an encounter which changes our lives: the encounter with a unique Man who lets us experience all God’s goodness and truth, who frees us from evil not in a superficial and fleeting way, but sets us free radically, heals us completely and restores our dignity. This is why Mary Magdalene calls Jesus "my hope": he was the one who allowed her to be reborn, who gave her a new future, a life of goodness and freedom from evil. "Christ my hope" means that all my yearnings for goodness find in him a real possibility of fulfilment: with him I can hope for a life that is good, full and eternal, for God himself has drawn near to us, even sharing our humanity.

But Mary Magdalene, like the other disciples, was to see Jesus rejected by the leaders of the people, arrested, scourged, condemned to death and crucified. It must have been unbearable to see Goodness in person subjected to human malice, truth derided by falsehood, mercy abused by vengeance. With Jesus’ death, the hope of all those who had put their trust in him seemed doomed. But that faith never completely failed: especially in the heart of the Virgin Mary, Jesus’ Mother, its flame burned even in the dark of night. In this world, hope can not avoid confronting the harshness of evil. It is not thwarted by the wall of death alone, but even more by the barbs of envy and pride, falsehood and violence. Jesus passed through this mortal mesh in order to open a path to the kingdom of life. For a moment Jesus seemed vanquished: darkness had invaded the land, the silence of God was complete, hope a seemingly empty word.

And lo, on the dawn of the day after the Sabbath, the tomb is found empty. Jesus then shows himself to Mary Magdalene, to the other women, to his disciples. Faith is born anew, more alive and strong than ever, now invincible since it is based on a decisive experience: "Death with life contended: combat strangely ended! Life’s own champion, slain, now lives to reign". The signs of the resurrection testify to the victory of life over death, love over hatred, mercy over vengeance: "The tomb the living did enclose, I saw Christ’s glory as he rose! The angels there attesting, shroud with grave-clothes resting".

Dear brothers and sisters! If Jesus is risen, then – and only then – has something truly new happened, something that changes the state of humanity and the world. Then he, Jesus, is someone in whom we can put absolute trust; we can put our trust not only in his message but in Jesus himself, for the Risen One does not belong to the past, but is present today, alive. Christ is hope and comfort in a particular way for those Christian communities suffering most for their faith on account of discrimination and persecution. And he is present as a force of hope through his Church, which is close to all human situations of suffering and injustice.

May the risen Christ grant hope to the Middle East and enable all the ethnic, cultural and religious groups in that region to work together to advance the common good and respect for human rights. Particularly in Syria, may there be an end to bloodshed and an immediate commitment to the path of respect, dialogue and reconciliation, as called for by the international community. May the many refugees from that country who are in need of humanitarian assistance find the acceptance and solidarity capable of relieving their dreadful sufferings. May the paschal victory encourage the Iraqi people to spare no effort in pursuing the path of stability and development. In the Holy Land, may Israelis and Palestinians courageously take up anew the peace process.

May the Lord, the victor over evil and death, sustain the Christian communities of the African continent; may he grant them hope in facing their difficulties, and make them peacemakers and agents of development in the societies to which they belong.

May the risen Jesus comfort the suffering populations of the Horn of Africa and favour their reconciliation; may he help the Great Lakes Region, Sudan and South Sudan, and grant their inhabitants the power of forgiveness. In Mali, now experiencing delicate political developments, may the glorious Christ grant peace and stability. To Nigeria, which in recent times has experienced savage terrorist attacks, may the joy of Easter grant the strength needed to take up anew the building of a society which is peaceful and respectful of the religious freedom of all its citizens.
