“Chiedo a tutti gli iracheni di andare a votare e di farlo per il bene dell’Iraq”. A tre giorni dalle elezioni in Iraq è il card. Emmanuel III Delly, patriarca di Baghdad dei caldei, a lanciare, attraverso il SIR, un appello al voto. “Stiamo pregando perché tutto avvenga senza violenza e nell’ordine – dichiara il cardinale – tutto ciò che è in nostro potere lo faremo per il bene del paese e del popolo”. Le violenze che hanno contrassegnato la campagna elettorale, le ultime ieri a Baquba con decine di morti, mostrano un Paese lacerato: “sono iracheni contro iracheni, partiti contro partiti, ognuno lotta per i suoi interessi. In questi partiti ci sono tutti, sciiti, sunniti, mandei, cristiani, di tante fedi e confessioni, ed è questo il problema. Sono lotte interne che provocano tante vittime”.

Il patriarca ha voluto poi ricordare la sua recentissima visita a Mosul: “ho incontrato la popolazione cristiana ed anche i capi civili e delle tribù locali che hanno insistito per venire in vescovado per parlarmi. Tutti si sono detti d’accordo a lavorare e collaborare per ripristinare la sicurezza e la tranquillità per tutta la città”. “Da parte nostra – conclude il card. Delly - preghiamo per la pace e la riconciliazione. All’orizzonte abbiamo il Sinodo per il Medio Oriente, un’occasione per lavorare a servizio non solo dell’Iraq ma di tutta la regione”. Analogo appello al voto lo ha rivolto anche il vicario patriarcale di Baghdad, mons. Shlemon Warduni, che a Fides ha dichiarato: “esortiamo tutti i cristiani votare e a eleggere candidati che lavorino per il bene dell’Iraq, perché nel paese tornino a regnare i diritti umani e la libertà religiosa. Il Parlamento riserva ai cristiani 5 seggi: speriamo che vadano a persone adatte a questo delicato compito, di rappresentare le comunità cristiane, di promuovere i nostri diritti, di governare la nostra nazione ferita e dare un contributo alla costruzione di un nuovo Iraq. Non smettiamo di sperare in una nuova era, in un nuovo tempo in cui trionfino il diritto, la giustizia, la stabilità, la garanzie dei diritti umani per tutti. Chiediamo e lavoriamo per la pace e per la libertà di religione, non solo per quella di culto. Il paese, per crescere, ha bisogno di pace e di sicurezza”.

“I ask all Iraqis to go to the polls and go there in the interest of Iraq”. Three days before the election in Iraq, it is card. Emmanuel III Delly, Chaldean Patriarch of Baghdad, who, through SIR, makes an appeal to vote. “We are praying that everything will take place without any violence and orderly – the cardinal states –. The violence that has affected the election campaign, the latest of which happened in Baquba yesterday, killing dozens of people, shows a torn country: “they are Iraqis against Iraqis, parties against parties, everyone fighting for one’s own interests. There is everyone in these parties, Shiites, Sunnis, Mandeans, Christians, people from lots of different faiths and confessions, and that is the problem. These are internecine fights that cause lots of victims”. Then, the Patriarch wanted to recall his very recent visit to Mosul: “I met the Christian population and even the civil leaders and the local chieftains who insisted to come to the diocese and talk to me. Everyone said they agreed on working and cooperating to restore security and tranquillity all over the city”. “On our part – concludes card. Delly – we pray for peace and reconciliation. Ahead of us, we have the Synod for the Middle East, an opportunity to work at the service not only of Iraq but of all the region”.

A similar appeal to go to the polls was also made by the Patriarchal Vicar of Baghdad, mgr. Shlemon Warduni, who said to Fides: “we urge all Christians to vote and elect nominees who will work in the interest of Iraq, so that human rights and religious freedom will reign again in the country. 5 seats are allocated to Christians in Parliament: hopefully they will be earned by people who are fit for this delicate task, that of representing the Christian communities, promoting our rights, running our hurt nation and contributing to the building of a new Iraq. Don’t let’s stop hoping in a new era, in a new time in which right, justice, stability, guaranteed human rights for everyone will triumph. We ask and work for peace and freedom of religion, not only for freedom of cult. The country needs peace and security to grow”.
