The Orthodox world too is getting ready to give its contribution to Europe within the European institutions, in enforcement of article 17 of the Lisbon Treaty, under which, “by recognising their identity and specific contribution, the Union establishes an open, transparent and regular dialogue with the Churches”. The “Committee of Representatives of the Orthodox Churches to the European Union” met in Brussels for the first time on Friday 17th March. Committee members include the metropolitan bishop Emmanuel of France (Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople) who has taken the role of chairman, father Antoni Ilyin (Patriarchate of Moscow), father Patriciu Vlaicu (Patriarchate of Romania), bishop Porphyrios of Naples (Church of Cyprus) and the metropolitan bishop Athanasios of Achaie (Church of Greece). The Committee decided to send a letter to the presidents of the three main European Institutions: Herman Van Rompuy (Council of Europe), Jerzy Buzek (European Parliament), and José Manuel Barroso (European Commission). The purpose of the letter was to “encourage dialogue between the European Institutions and the Churches”. “The Committee – states a release on the website orthodoxie.com – regards this relationship as a challenge and an opportunity to promote the fundamental values and the principles on which the European culture is based itself”.
