POPE IN CYPRUS: SKOULLOS (MARONITES), “HE WILL ENCOURAGE THE PATH OF RECONCILIATION”

“Cyprus needs the help and support of all those who, like the Pope, can contribute to the solution of our problem. The island of Cyprus is a member of the European Union, but has continued to suffer for decades due to the Turkish occupation and the divisions of its people, Greek and Turkish, who should be able to live together on this small island. The contribution of each person that can encourage the path of reconciliation we have started is essential”. This is the political message of Benedict XVI’s visit to Cyprus (from tomorrow to 6 June) in the words of Antonios Skoullos, Maronite, in charge of relations with the media in the organizing committee of the Catholic Church. In fact, talks between the most important political leaders of the island resumed last week. “The very fact that we are trying to talk to one another is very encouraging”, explained Mr. Skoullous on the website Terrasanta.net. “Looking for a peaceful and negotiated solution to the conflict, rather than a military one, is positive and I’m sure that we will reach a solution. It will certainly take time. It will take longer than they say, but I believe it is better to reach a concrete and satisfactory result than to be in a hurry, just to meet the expectations of others. As an ordinary citizen, I see things very positively. Continuing to talk is good and I would be very disappointed if in a few months’ time we were to be told that the talks have been broken off”.
