“The Holy See is monitoring” Sakineh’s case “with attention and involvement”. It was stated yesterday, Sunday 5th September, by the director of the Vatican Newsroom, father Federico Lombardi, as he answered the journalists’ questions about the case of the Iranian woman sentenced to death by stoning, after hearing about her son’s appeal to the international community and the Vatican. “The position of the Church, which is against death penalty, is well known, and stoning is a particularly brutal form of it – father Lombardi explained –. When the Holy See is appropriately asked to take action on a humanitarian issue with another country’s authorities, as it happened many times before, it usually does not do it in a public form but through its own diplomatic channels”.
