ERITREANS IN SINAI: APPEAL TO THE EU TO PROMOTE “HUMANITARIAN EVACUATION”

“Humanitarian evacuation” of the group of refugees abducted in Sinai towards the European territory: that was the appeal launched to European institutions by Italian MPs as well as representatives of humanitarian associations today. The appeal adopted the proposal launched by the Italian Council for Refugees (CIR). “We hope that this initiative will be accepted by European institutions - said Christopher Hein, CIR Director – as the only solution to save the lives of refugees and give them the protection they have a right to”. “Once they have safely reached the territory of the Union – said CIR – it will be possible to distribute them to several Member States, following the availability which governments will have to grant, pursuant to the principle of fair responsibility sharing”. Humanitarian evacuation would allow Egyptian authorities to share the management of this difficult humanitarian situation, with support from the European Union. “It is necessary to point out – stated CIR - that lots of those migrants were forced towards a new escape after the closing of European frontiers depending on the rejection policy. Lots of them come from Libya, including people rejected a few kilometres from Italian coasts”. Savino Pezzotta, Livia Turco, Paola Binetti, Jean Leonard Touadì, Luigi Zanda, and Luigi Manconi are some of the subscribers of the appeal.
