Being “the protagonists and proactive partners in the social and cultural sphere” with the Italian Government and the Italian Church to contribute to “the reception and social inclusion of those who have come or are still coming to Italy”. This was stated, in an interview with SIR, by mgr. Siluan, bishop of the Orthodox Diocese of Italy, on the occasion of the celebrations that took place in Milan last weekend for the 35th anniversary of the Romanian Orthodox presence in Italy. “We promise to our Italian brothers that we will do our best to repay their welcome”, added the bishop, thanking for the “35 years of cooperation and brotherhood” during which the Orthodox community “has been welcomed, supported, backed, encouraged”. A very lively and ever-increasing Christian community, as also shown by the “1,300 marriages and 8,900 baptisms” of last year’s Romanian diaspora, despite the fact “many of the devotees choose to go back to Romania to celebrate these two events”. “While in 2004 when I was sent to Italy as an auxiliary bishop, the Orthodox parishes were about 36, in 2008 when I began my Episcopal ministry they were almost 80, now they are over 125 all over Italy”, with an average of “300 devotees per parish”.
