CARD. DELLY (BAGHDAD) “WE HOPE IT WILL END WELL”

“A decision that does not make us unhappy, but, after the peaceful rallies and the signs of solidarity, we hope this will end well”. From Rome, where he is taking part in the Episcopal Synod, card. Mar Emmanuel III Delly, patriarch of Baghdad of the Chaldeans, speaks again of the repeal of art. 50 of the electoral law of the provincial councils, that secured 13 seats for the minorities, including the Christian one. “I am constantly in touch with Iraq to monitor the developments and work for the defence of the rights of all minorities, especially those of our Christians”, he states in an interview with SIR (online at agensir.it). “I have written letters to the President of the Republic, of Parliament, to the Prime Minister, to the deputy presidents of the Republic, to the religious leaders Al Sistani, begging them to do something to give the minorities back their rights. They all promised they will do something in this direction. Now, we hope the response will be positive”. “It was important – he concludes – to make our voice heard, peaceful. If we hadn’t, maybe in the future they would have decided worse things than these”. In the meantime, last night, the Iraqi Presidential Council established that “art. 50 should be discussed by Parliament and voted on as a separate law”.
