UKRAINE: CARD. SANDRI, ONLY THE POPE MAY ESTABLISH JUST ONE PATRIARCHATE

"The problem of the Ukrainian Greek-Orthodox Patriarchate - it is stated at the Ukrainian site of religious information Risu (www.risu.org.ua) - is within the scope of the Pope only; and in solving it, one should take into consideration the consequences of the proclamation of a patriarchate in the ecumenical sense": it was declared by Card. Leonardo Sandri during the press conference taking place today in Lviv. In the past, Cardinal Lubomir Husar, major archbishop of Lviv, suggested several times that, in Ukraine, the Greek-Catholics and the Orthodox, sharing the same liturgical, spiritual and theological tradition, may be under the jurisdiction of one Patriarch only. The prefect of the Congregation for Eastern Churches is paying a visit to Ukraine (10-12 July), accepting the invitation of the Ukrainian bishops during their "Ad Limina" visit last February. Cardinal Sandri was in Ukraine for the first time in 2001, when he accompanied Pope John Paul II to that country.
