According to the apostolic nuncio in Damascus, peace is possible as long as the two main powers of the region, Iran and Saudi Arabia, sit at the same table and talk. An unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. Isis is a serious problem but it is not the cause of the conflict. He has been an apostolic nuncio since he was 18 year old, for 37 years he has been travelling “around the world” at the service of the Church, but this experience in Syria “is the most delicate in this regard because at first it seemed, and it partially is, a civil war. However, the situation is much more complex.” Cardinal Zenari has been a nuncio in Syria for eight years; he occasionally comes to Rome and reports to the Pope. It is in the Vatican where we find and interview him. His thoughts are constantly on the ragged country he comes from, the common people trapped in the worst humanitarian catastrophe since World War II, according to the United Nations. Official sources talk of 400,000 victims of the Syria war, many more, says the cardinal, are those who died because of lack of care. In Syria, hospitals, healthcare facilities, medical staff, everything went lost and destroyed.
