UKRAINE: UN DONATES $100,000 TO HELP HOMELESS AFTER A SEVERE COLD SPELL

snow-ukraine-ps.photoblog900(SIR Europe - Bratislava) - The United Nations (UN) has donated $100,000 to aid Ukraine’s homeless after over 150 people died during a severe cold spell. According to the UN spokesman Viktoria Andriyevska, the money will be spent on warm clothing, food and heating centers. The country was hit by temperatures plunging to minus 30 degrees Celsius earlier this month, claiming 151 lives and leaving nearly 4,000 people hospitalized with hypothermia, reports the Ukrainian Religious Information Service. According to emergency officials, in 90% of cases the victims died because they were under the influence of alcohol. Experts say the problem highlighted this ex-Soviet republic’s difficulty to deal with problems regarding homeless people.
