ROMANIA: MONS. DAMIAN (BUCHAREST), “COURAGEOUS WITNESS” OF CATHOLICS “TO PROTECT THE FAMILY”

Famiglia-3(Sir Europe - Bratislava) - In the Romanian society today, Catholics are called to “speak up for and bear courageous witness to their faith and the values in which they believe and on which their personal and familiar life is founded”. Mgr. Cornel Damian, Auxiliary Bishop of Bucharest and President of the Commission for the Family of the Romanian Bishops’ Conference, said this yesterday during the conference “Where is the family going today?”. Analysing the profile of the family in Romania in the light of the statistical data of the past few years, Mgr. Damian identified some of the threats facing it, including the “current steady” population decline. Economic insecurity has an impact on the decisions of young people to form a family and of married couples to have children, and forces many to migrate and to leave their children with relatives. “Currently 80,000 children in our country are born to immigrant parents”, the bishop pointed out. Besides insecurity, we are also faced with a “progressive loss of moral and spiritual values, the lack of adequate preparation for marriage and family life, social pressure, and the abandonment of religious education”. Mgr. Damian highlighted that “the Church’s institutional and pastoral action” alone cannot protect the family. “We all need to offer our commitment, contribution and witness”.
