UKRAINE: CLOSED THE FIRST EUCHARISTIC CONGRESS OF ROMAN CATHOLICS HELD IN LVIV

cristo-luce-del-mondo(Sir Europe - Bratislava) - Several thousands of Roman Catholics participated in the closing ceremony of the First All-Ukrainian Eucharistic Congress held on 3 June in Lviv, Ukraine. The event culminated with a Holy Mass at the premises of the campus of the Lviv University of Veterinary Medicine. The Eucharistic celebration was presided over by cardinal Angelo Comastri, vicar general of Pope Benedict XVI, who greeted participants on behalf of the Holy Father and presented a Eucharist chalice to them. “The Most Holy Father Benedict XVI is spiritually present here with us at the celebration and is praying that the First Eucharistic Congress will leave you with deep impressions”, said cardinal Comastri. The liturgy was served in concelebration with apostolic nuncio to Ukraine, Mons. Thomas Gullickson, all higher ranks of the clergy of the Roman Catholic Church in Ukraine led by metropolitan Mieczyslaw Mokrzycki, bishops from abroad and bishops Yosyf Milian and Hlib Lonchyna of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.
According to the Religious Information Service of Ukraine, it was attended by 400 priests from all Ukrainian dioceses and from Poland, Belarus, Italy, Romania and Austria, as well as representatives of official state authorities. After the Mass, the clergymen and lay people formed a procession and walked along the streets to the main Roman Catholic Church of the Assumption of the Holy Virgin where the closing events and a celebratory concert were held. The Eucharistic Congress started on 26 May in Kyiv. “We wanted it to help people deeply realize the great gift of the Church left by Jesus Christ, for He is always present in the Eucharist”, explained auxiliary bishop Stanislaw Shyrokoradiuk of the Kyiv-Zhytomyr diocese.
