SLOVAKIA: BISHOPS’ DEEP DISAPPOINTMENT OVER ESTABLISHMENT OF LGBTI COMMITTEE

Sastin bazilika 1-2(Sir Europe - Bratislava) - “We are very disappointed by this decision. We understand it as the enforcement of a very tough ideological agenda against the family”, said Jozef Kovácik, spokesman of the Bishops’ Conference of Slovakia, commenting on this week’s decision by the Government to establish the Committee for Protection of the Rights of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and Intersex (LGBTI) Persons. The Bishops’ Conference and several pro-life and pro-family organizations have appealed to the competent authorities for months asking them to oppose the establishment of such committee. “3643 people have turned to the government with their protest”, explained Marek Nikolov from the association Pastor Bonus, expressing disappointment over the fact that these voices were ignored by the Government. Marek Michalcík, vice-president of the Forum for Life, considers the creation of the committee for people with other than heterosexual orientation “unnecessary”, because the agenda for any human rights is already covered by other existing bodies. The Committee for Protection of the Rights of LGBTI Persons should start its work in January 2013.
