Il ministero del Turismo e della Cultura turco avrebbe deciso di destinare la chiesa-museo di san Paolo, a Tarso, a luogo permanente di culto. “Si tratta di una concessione resa nota verbalmente e non ancora messa per iscritto – dichiara al SIR mons. Luigi Padovese, presidente della Conferenza episcopale turca (Cet) –, non sappiamo ancora a chi verrà affidata la cura del luogo. Invito dunque alla prudenza del caso”. Una conferma arriva anche dalla comunità di suore che a Tarso accoglie i pellegrini che, dopo la pausa invernale, stanno ritornando. Solo ieri, spiegano le religiose, ci sono stati oltre 100 pellegrini veronesi. “Si tratta di un passo avanti, positivo, ma bisogna aspettare di vedere nero su bianco – aggiunge il presidente della Cet –. Credo sia positivo anche l’intervento del nuovo ambasciatore turco presso la Santa Sede”. Le buone notizie per la Chiesa cattolica turca non si fermano qui: “Ad Iskenderun – afferma mons. Padovese – lo Stato ha restaurato la chiesa siro-cattolico che era diventata un cinema a luci rosse. Rinnovata del tutto sarà consacrata ai primi di giugno. Segni positivi che registriamo con la dovuta prudenza. Circa il sisma che ha colpito l’8 marzo Elazig (Turchia centro-orientale) – conclude – non ho notizie di feriti o vittime tra la comunità cristiana, suppongo, quindi che al momento non ci siano cristiani coinvolti”.

The Turkish Ministry of Tourism and Culture seems to have decided to convert the museum-church of Saint Paul, in Tarsus, into a permanent place of worship. “It is a concession that was verbally made and that has not been put in writing yet – states to SIR mgr. Luigi Padovese, president of the Turkish Bishops Conference (Cet) –, we do not know who will be appointed to run the place yet. Therefore I invite you to be cautious”. A confirmation also comes from the community of nuns who, in Tarsus, give shelter to the pilgrims that are coming back after the winter pause. Yesterday alone, the nuns explain, over 100 pilgrims came from Verona. “It is a positive step forward but we must wait until we see it put it down in writing – adds the president of Cet –, I think the new Turkish Ambassador to the Holy See did a good job too”. But there are more good news for the Turkish Catholic Church: “In Iskenderun – states mgr. Padovese – the State restored the Syro-Catholic church that had been converted into a porn cinema. Once fully renovated, it will be consecrated in early June. Positive signs which we acknowledge with due caution. As to the earthquake that hit Elazig (Central-Eastern Turkey) on March 8th – he concludes –, I have no news of any victims or injured people among the Christian community, so I suppose there are no Christians involved for the time being”.
